The shipping channel on the Vistula Spit is to be opened on September 17, but it has already been filled with water. Devices are being tested to enable units to freely navigate the canal, reported the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

Magdalena Kierzkowska, a spokeswoman for the Maritime Office in Gdynia, informed that the lock was filled last week and the water level reached its target level. Filling took place through burned-in holes in the bulkheads. All this to reduce the mass of water flowing into the lock at once. This made it possible to closely monitor the entire process.

In the next stage, the steel temporary bulkhead will be removed from the northern and southern parts. The process will end with tests of the entire crossing from the Master Control System located at the Nowy Świat Harbor Master’s Office, which includes the control of bridges, lock gates, signaling and variable message signs. Tests of the gates are also in progress – they are opened and closed alternately – said a spokeswoman for the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

Tourists who will soon come on vacation to the Vistula Spit will be able to see the almost target view of the shipping canal.

“There is water in the entire shipping canal and, of course, in the lock itself. In addition, they will be able to see the entire outline of the structure – breakwaters, two swing bridges, including one you will definitely be able to cross, pass by car or bicycle, the building of the Nowy Świat Captain’s Office and parking spaces from There is also more and more of the target vegetation. The best view will be from one of the specially prepared vantage points on the western side of the canal “- emphasized Magdalena Kierzkowska.

The new waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Bay of Gdańsk is to strengthen Poland’s sovereignty and make it independent of the decisions of the Russian side. Polish units had to obtain permission each time to sail through the Piławska Strait Russia. Once the canal is built, they won’t have to do this. Thanks to the ditch, the route of ships sailing from the Bay of Gdańsk to the Vistula Lagoon will also be shortened. The investment will strengthen the port in Elbląg and the ports on the Vistula Lagoon as planned.
