The Oscars celebrate their jubilee this year – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards the awards for the 95th time. The film “IO” by Jerzy Skolimowski, already appreciated during last year’s edition of the Cannes Film Festival, has a chance for an Oscar in the best international film category. Will he win a statuette? At tvn24.pl we cover the gala live.

The Oscars 2023, i.e. the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) awards ceremony, will be a jubilee gala – the statuettes will be presented for the 95th time. The jubilee Oscars ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, where the first Oscars gala was held in March 2002. The famous hall can accommodate nearly 3,400 people.

In early January, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the winners of this year’s Oscars will be selected from among 301 full-length films that met the conditions of the regulations. Their stars, stars and creators were nominated in 20 out of 24 categories (except for the best international film, where the nominated titles are selected from the official candidates of individual countries and dependent territories, and three for short films).

  • Only 10 minutes left to start.

  • We strongly support the Polish candidate – the film “IO” by Jerzy Skolimowski, which won the 13th nomination for Polish cinematography in the category of the best international film. Interestingly, in 1967 Skolimowski’s film “Start” was a Belgian candidate.

  • Good evening! We begin our coverage of the 95th Academy Awards. For over three hours we will follow what is happening at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Oscars 2023. Jerzy Skolimowski’s “IO” nominated for Poland

In the category of the best international film, the nomination – as expected – went to the Polish candidate “IO” Jerzy Skolimowski. This is the first nomination for a film directed by a legendary filmmaker. At the same time, “IO” is the thirteenth Polish candidate to be nominated, and “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski is the first Polish winner in this category. It is worth recalling that in 1985 the film “Bitter Harvest” was nominated Agnieszka Hollandwho was a candidate of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Oscars 2023. Jimmy Kimmel hosts for the third time

The host of this year’s gala is Jimmy Kimmel. The comedian, actor and American TV star made his debut in this role in 2017, during the 89th ceremony the Oscars. It was during this evening that the historic happened mistakes when announcing the winner in the best movie category. Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty – invited to read the winner in this category in connection with the 50th anniversary of the premiere of “Bonnie and Clyde” – received the wrong envelope and announced that “La La Land” wins an Oscar. After a few minutes, it turned out that the award should go to the producers of the film “Moonlight”. Kimmel hosted Oscar night again in 2018.

The producers of the show are the duo of Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, the latter is also the director of the whole project. Both are multiple Emmy Award winners for their television broadcasts of various events. For Weiss, this will be the eighth consecutive Oscar gala he will direct. In 2017 and 2018, he received Emmy Awards for directing the 89th and 90th Oscars.
