James Martin, who played one of the main roles in the Oscar-winning “The Irish Farewell”, works in a Belfast restaurant on a daily basis. Even before the verdict of the American Film Academy, he announced that he did not intend to give up his current duties.

“Irish Farewell” on March 12 received an Oscar for best live action short film. Martin assured in January that his popularity in “Irish Farewell” would not affect his life decisions: he still works as a chef at the Italian restaurant Scalini’s in Belfast and part-time as a barista at the local Starbucks cafe. “I can make garlic bread, meatballs, salads and mussels, chips and the like,” he told the Daily Mail.

Speaking about being an actor with Down’s syndrome, he stated that “anyone can act, whether or not you have Down’s syndrome doesn’t matter.” He also mentioned Stephen Hawking and his performance in “The Simpsons”. In Martin’s opinion, an astrophysicist who died in 2018 suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosisHe was a “fantastic actor”.

“From Belfast Barista to Beverly Hills”

He gained international fame thanks to his role in “The Irish Farewell” by Tom Berkeley and Ross White. He played Lorcan, who reunites with his brother (played by Seamus O’Hara – ed.) after years of separation. Both are tasked with completing a to-do list left by their late mother.
