The film by Swedish-Polish director Magnus von Horn “The Girl with the Needle” is on the “short list” of titles from which five Oscar nominees in the best international film category will be selected. “The Girl with the Needle” is Denmark's official candidate. However, the Polish candidate “Under the Volcano” by Damian Kocur was eliminated from the race in this category.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on Tuesday published “shortlists” of titles in 10 categories, including: best foreign film, best feature-length documentary, best short film, best music and best song. Nominees will be selected from among those on the lists Oscar in these categories.
Oscars 2025. The Polish candidate is out of the race
In the best international film category, “Girl with a Needle” directed by the Swedish-Polish filmmaker Magnus von Horn, which was submitted by Dish. The film, whose world premiere took place as part of the Main Competition of the Cannes Film Festival, has for weeks been indicated as one of the strongest titles in the current film awards season.
The Polish Oscar committee, chaired by Paweł Pawlikowski, nominated “Under the Volcano” directed by Damian Kocur as the official candidate. The film was among the fifteen candidates announced by AMPAS.
The academy said this year's 15 shortlisted films were selected from entries submitted by 85 countries and territories. This category includes full-length films (over 40 minutes), produced outside the United States, most of whose dialogues (at least 50%) are in a language other than English.
In addition to “Girl with a Needle”, the following also have a chance for nomination: “Emilia Pérez” (France), “Armand” (Norway), “Santosh” (Great Britain), “Dahomey” (Senegal), “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” (Germany), “Kneecap.
