Otwock. Cheating method for grandson. Detained

Police officers from Otwock near Warsaw detained three young men involved in the “grandchild method” fraud. The suspects allegedly extorted over PLN 50,000 from the elderly woman.

As reported on Monday by Sgt. pcs. Patryk Domarecki from the Otwock police station, the men pretended to be the grandson of an elderly woman, informing her that he had been involved in a road accident and needed money for bail to avoid prison.

– The woman believed and gave the fraudsters her savings, cash in various currencies and jewelry. The total losses amounted to over PLN 52,500 – explained Sgt. pcs. Domarecki. He added that the woman filed a report and the criminals immediately started searching. – The police caught the trail of the first fraudster. He was a 25-year-old Azerbaijani citizen. The police determined that he played the role of a so-called “receiver”, Domarecki reported.

Staying in a Krakow hostel

The 25-year-old was arrested in Warsaw. His accomplices – a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old were captured in one of the hotel rooms in Krakow. After searching it, the officers seized cash in the amount of PLN 1.8 thousand and phones that could have been used in the crime. One of the detainees was wanted for another fraud case.

The men were charged with fraud. They pleaded not guilty. They face up to eight years in prison.

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Otwock requested the court to impose pre-trial detention on all three detainees for three months, and the court agreed to this request.
