The police in Otwock informed about the detention of five men suspected of “banker” fraud. According to the officers, the men calling the aggrieved persons pretended to be bank employees and then persuaded them to install software that allowed them to gain access to their phones. In this way, the fraudsters took over the victims’ bank accounts and the funds accumulated on them, and even took out loans.
According to Paulina Harabin from the County Police Headquarters in Otwock, in mid-September two residents of the Otwock County were deceived using the “banker” method. – According to the reports of the victims, they were called by a man with an Eastern accent who introduced himself as a bank employee and said that there was an attempt to take a loan on their accounts. The women believed that they had to install the application to protect the funds accumulated in bank accounts and followed all the orders given by the fraudsters. By installing the software, criminals gained access to their phones and then their bank accounts, Harabin reports. In this way, they debited the bank account of one of the victims for the amount of PLN 30 thousand. zlotys, and the other’s bill for 60,000.
Five men were arrested
After reporting both cases of fraud, the police established the personal details of people who may have been related to them. – In total, five men aged 26, 25, 23, 21 and 19 were detained in Warsaw and Katowice. During the search of their living quarters and their vehicles, the officers secured cash in the amount of PLN 42,000, sim cards, mobile phones, a router, a laptop, debit cards and a dummy Glock pistol – says Harabin.
In addition, during the search, the 25-year-old suspect tried to persuade the policeman to withdraw from official activities by offering him a bribe of PLN 40,000. zlotys.
Charges and arrest
– The extensive evidence collected in the case allowed the accusations of fraud to be presented to the detainees, and the 25-year-old additionally charged with an attempt to give financial benefits in exchange for abandoning the activity – adds Harabin.
The Otwock District Court issued a decision on three-month detention for all suspected men. The policemen emphasize that the case is developmental and do not rule out further arrests.
Both for frauds and for an attempt to give a financial advantage in return for refraining from acting, the penal code provides for a penalty of imprisonment from 6 months to 8 years.
