Wind speeds of 120-135 km/h are expected, with gusts up to 150-200 km/h. Many areas are expected to be affected by heavy rainfall.

Meteorologists have warned that the traditional thatched huts of the poorest Pakistanis may not survive the conditions.

The head of the government of the province of Sindh in southern Pakistan, Murad Ali Shah, said the army would help to evacuate 80,000 people living up to eight kilometers inland, the AFP agency reported.

As the minister said, the demand for evacuation was conveyed through all channels – by radio messages, but also through mosques and social channels.

However, many people do not want to leave their homes. “We will be helpless in government camps, we are better off here on our own,” villager Gul Muhammad Uplano told Reuters.

In 1998, a cyclone killed at least 4,000 people and caused millions of dollars in property damage in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Last year, Pakistan suffered extensive flooding during the monsoon season in the summer. One-third of the country was flooded. 1,700 people died, two million homes were destroyed, and damages totaled $30 billion. Pakistan is one of the countries most at risk of extreme weather, which scientists say is becoming more frequent as a result of negative climate change.
