At least three people have died in the Khyber mountain pass in Pakistan after a landslide buried 20 trucks. Several people were hospitalized. According to Pakistani authorities, the death toll could rise.

An extensive landslide occurred during a severe thunderstorm that passed over northwestern Pakistan early Tuesday morning in the area of ​​the Khyber mountain pass. Masses of earth and mud covered more than 20 trucks that passed through the route connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan.

At least three people died

Abdul Nasir Khan, the deputy commissioner of Khyber district, said the death toll had risen to three. He confirmed that two Afghan nationals were killed. The third person’s body was found hours later.

– Three other people were taken to the hospital. The number of dead may increase, Khan said.

“Quite extensive landslide”

“Twenty to twenty-five trucks were buried,” he told Reuters. “The landslide is quite extensive and our rescue operation is carried out with heavy machinery,” he said.

“It happened around two o’clock in the morning. It rained. A huge thunder woke us up. We heard the sounds of people and ambulances. Half an hour later, it turned out that about 20 trucks had been buried, said one of the drivers, Raza Khan.
