The Islamabad High Court on Thursday overturned a decision to arrest former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan’s detention on Tuesday on corruption charges sparked violent protests across the country.

“The arrest is invalid and the entire trial must be reviewed,” said Umar Ata Bandial, a Supreme Court judge who heard an appeal by Khan’s lawyers against his arrest on Tuesday.

Since the overthrow of Khan’s government by parliament in April 2022, more than a hundred legal proceedings have been launched against the former prime minister. The now 70-year-old former prime minister was detained in Islamabad on Tuesday on corruption charges.

Bloody protests in Pakistan

Khan’s arrest sparked protests across the country. Demonstrators broke into military facilities and set fire to state buildings and police cars in various cities. The protests left at least five people dead and police detained more than 1,650 demonstrators in Khan’s home province of Punjab alone.

High Commissioner on Thursday UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Tuerk called on the Pakistani security forces to show “restraint” and appealed to the protesters to “abstain from all violence”.

“The keys to resolving political disputes are freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and the rule of law,” Tuerk tweeted. I also appeal to the protesters to refrain from violence,” he added.

Khan and criticism of the US authorities

Khan, who took power in 2018, maintains that his government was overthrown by a US conspiracy. Current authorities Pakistan under Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif he calls “an imported government.” After losing his position, Khan began organizing mass rallies against the new cabinet.
