At least 15 people have been killed in riots that broke out in Papua New Guinea after police officers went on strike over a lack of pay increases. The mob looted stores and set fire to buildings throughout Wednesday night.

As police in Papua New Guinea reported on Thursday, at least 15 people were killed as a result of violent unrest in the country. Eight people were killed in Port Moresby, the capital, and seven others in Lae, the country’s largest city, the commissioner of the Royal Papua New Guinea Police Force said.

The mob looted stores and set fire to buildings throughout Wednesday night. Prime Minister James Marape said in a statement that “lawlessness” would not be tolerated. The riots broke out after the police announced a strike due to the lack of salary increases, reports “The Guardian”.

The US Embassy in Port Moresby said police were back on duty but tensions remained high. “The relative calm could change at any moment,” the statement said.
