For the 134th time, one of the main streets of Chicago underwent a parade of over 100 Polish groups. An opportunity for the solemn celebration was the Festival of the 3rd of May. Polish politicians also took part in the event.
The parade consisting of colorful platforms and marching groups passed along the Columbus Drive Avenue on Lake Michigan. This year's Parade Marshal was a Polish community activist and professor of Texas University of Texas A & m Jim Mazurkiewicz, who, according to reports, was to be one of the candidates for the new ambassador USA in Warsaw. Mazurkiewicz mentioned that although his ancestors emigrated to the USA during the partitions, his family never forgot about the Polish tradition.
“Let's not forget our past because it will happen again,” he warned.
“Proud House” of the Polish population
– Chicago is a proud home for the largest Polish population outside Poland. It is also a place of the largest Polish parade in the world outside Poland – said the mayor of the city, Democrat Brandon Johnson.
– From the earliest days, Polish Americans have made a great contribution to the cultural landscape of diversity in our country, which is why today's day is so important, not only to celebrate the signing of the Polish Constitution of 1791, but also to raise spirit and appreciate the lively, unique cultures and traditions of the Polish community – he added.
Participants brought election posters
The PiS candidate for the President of the Republic of Poland was present at the Tribunal, as well as the PO senator Grzegorz Schetyna and other Polish politicians, including PiS MP Janusz Kowalski and MEP Adam Bielan. They also took part in a solemn breakfast with the organizers, but did not give speeches at the parade. According to the RMF FM radio, the organizers did not agree, wanting to avoid the election campaign to cover the event.
Despite this, political elements appeared at the parade. Some viewers chanted slogans and brought banners supporting Nawrocki, another group had banners of Rafał Trzaskowski. There were also flags among the groups participating in the Parade on Columbus Drive Donald Trump.
“Today, we share a great day of freedom, democracy and the Polish national spirit. Together with the Polish diaspora and friends, we celebrate the feast of the Constitution of May 3 – the first in Europe and the second in the world. It was an act of courage, reason and progressive thinking, after over 200 years of dramatic events and phrases, which led us to membership in NATO and the European Participants of the great, third -commercial parade in Chicago ” – wrote Schetyna after the parade on Platform X. He shared photos from the event at which the Sejm Deputy Marshal was also present Monika Wielichowska.
