There are protests against the pension reform in France. Clashes with police took place in Paris’ Place de la République on Tuesday evening. Tensions also persist in other cities after the parliament rejected a motion of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on Monday.

Initially, the demonstration in Paris was peaceful, but at some point it began to spiral out of control. Various objects and firecrackers flew towards the police in Republic Square, and the officers responded with tear gas. Several people were detained.

Clashes with security forces also took place in other French cities on Tuesday. In Nantes, police attacked by demonstrators used tear gas. In Montpellier, protesters set up barricades in the evening and then set them on fire. A torchlight march took place in Grenoble.

According to the account of one of the participants of Tuesday’s meeting at the Elysée Palace, the president of France Emmanuel Macron he stated that the crowds demonstrating against the pension reform “have no legitimacy in the face of a people that expresses itself sovereignly through its elected representatives.”

Authorities expect more protests

On Thursday, when trade unions announced another wave of protests across Francethe authorities expect up to 800,000 people on the streets.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Tuesday the mobilization of 12,000 police and gendarmes across the country ahead of Thursday’s protests. 5,000 officers are to be deployed in Paris alone.

The pension reform pushed through by the French government raises the transition age retirement from 62 to 64 years.
