Jane Birkin – actress, fashion icon

Born in London, Jane Birkin began her acting career when she met singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg on the set of Pierre Grimblat’s Slogan in 1969. Then their relationship began. Over the next decade, Gainsbourg wrote some of France’s best-known songs for Birkin. He also wrote for her after their split in 1980 until his death in 1991. Jane Birkin continued her career as an actress and singer and became a national icon of France as described by the French media.

The singer was forced to cancel several shows in 2021 after suffering a mild stroke. She canceled concerts again in March after breaking her shoulder blade. Her return to the stage, scheduled for May, has been postponed again.

Jane Birkin died on July 16 at the age of 76 at his home in Paris. In a press release, her daughters Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon said she had been battling the disease for 16 years.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted after Birkin’s death: “Because she embodied freedom, she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.” He added that “her voice was as sweet as her commitment was fervent.”
