Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople experienced moments of anxiety on the first day of his visit to the United States. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America said he was hospitalized shortly after landing in Washington. As reported in the release, “following the doctor’s recommendations, he will spend the night in the hospital for observation.”
As you can read in the release, the reason was travel fatigue. Bartholomew felt unwell before the Sunday service at the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Washington and, on the advice of a doctor, went to the hospital for observation.
“Following the doctor’s recommendations (the clergyman) will spend the night in the hospital under observation and will be discharged tomorrow morning” – it was reported.
He will meet the president of the United States
On Sunday, the 81-year-old Ecumenical Patriarch’s visit to the United States began its 12-day visit. On Monday, he is to meet with US President Joe Biden at the White House, as well as, inter alia, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, the head of US diplomacy Antony Blinken and the Turkish ambassador to the US.
He is also expected to receive an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Notre Dame in Indiana on Thursday.
This is Bartholomew’s third trip to the USA. He had met with Biden before, when he was still visiting Turkey as US vice president. On Friday, Biden will be received in audience by Pope Francis in the Vatican.
