Patriots for Ukraine. Pentagon: Ukrainians will start training in the US on the Patriot air defense system next week

Patriot training for Ukrainian soldiers will begin next week, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder confirmed on Tuesday. He added that it would take several months and about 100 military personnel would take part in it.

The training program will be delivered at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where USA conduct their own training in the operation of an advanced air defense system. Fort Sill is one of the U.S. Army’s four primary training centers and home to a facility that has been training military personnel for over a century.

According to Ryder, 90-100 Ukrainian air defense soldiers will participate in the training, which is the number needed to operate and maintain the Patriot batteries.

Soldiers are to undergo a full course, which will consist of classes in classrooms, training on Patriots and simulators. The training will take into account the realities of the battlefield in Ukraine. Ryder added that the US will try to shorten the duration of the training, although it will take “several months”.

Training also in Bavaria

Ryder also announced that the training of Ukrainian battalions at the base in Grafenwoehr in Bavaria will also begin next week. The exercises of units of about 500 soldiers will use M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, which are to be delivered to Ukraine in a few weeks.

Earlier that day, information about the planned training of Ukrainians in operating the Patriots was reported by CNN, citing information from two American officials familiar with the matter.

Patriots for Ukraine

In late December last year, the US announced it would provide Ukraine with $1.85 billion worth of military aid, including but not limited to: for the first time, the Patriot air defense system. The battery includes power generation equipment, computers, a control system and up to eight launchers. It is manned by around 90 soldiers, and their training usually takes several months.

Later also Germany declared that it would provide further military aidincluding the Marder combat vehicles and the Patriot system battery.
