people want PiS to be held accountable. Poland 2050 has a different explanation

Commenting on the weaker result of his coalition partners in the elections on June 9, the leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, said that people do not want to compromise with evil. It is difficult not to understand these words as a call to more consistently hold the previous government to account. Politicians of Poland 2050 say that holding PiS accountable is not everything, and voters care about the economy.

Holding the rule of Law and Justice accountable – for scandals, abuses of power, and simple theft – was one of the main slogans of the Civic Coalition's election campaign.

– This name of “settlement” means taking a position of revenge, seeking satisfaction for wrongdoing. No, the law is simply supposed to be applied. If there were illegal acts, they must be accounted for, comments Professor Włodzimierz Wróbel, judge of the Supreme Court.

The diagnosis of the Civic Coalition is that the slogan of holding the rule of Law and Justice to account allowed them to win the elections to the European Parliament and obtain a result significantly better than the result of the coalition partners – the Left and, above all, the Third Way.

Hołownia's reflections on the sense of holding PiS politicians accountable

– At the end of the campaign, Szymon Hołownia's not-so-fortunate statement that “it's not that important” could have made part of the Third Way electorate decide to vote for the Civic Coalition, which clearly declares a tough course on settlements, or stay at home – comments Dorota Łoboda, KO MP.

Szymon Hołownia publicly wondered whether it makes sense to hold Law and Justice accountable. – Will they go to prison or not? Perhaps they should go to jail, but will it make us any better? – Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia asked at the end of May.

The Marshal of the Sejm spoke his words at a time when Tomasz Mraz was revealing the scale of abuses in the Justice Fund – fixing competitions and pumping public money into the electoral districts of Zbigniew Ziobro's people.

Poland 2050 has a different explanation for the low score of the Third Way

– Poles want evil to be called evil. Really. They want people who broke the law, stole and cheated to face consequences, says Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Speaker of the Senate from the Civic Coalition.

– This is not even a matter of settlements. This is a matter of basic order on the farm, says Waldemar Pawlak, senator of the Polish People's Party.

The government Agency of Strategic Reserves has concluded an agreement with the manufacturer of patriotic clothing – advertised by the president and prime minister. Half a billion zlotys of public money was diverted in this way.

Then Donald Tusk wrote: “The task of the Prosecutor General will be to check all cases of 'theft in accordance with procedures'. This Russian patent used by Law and Justice on a large scale will not be a patent for impunity in Poland.”

– It is impossible to build a just state without holding accountable those who have destroyed this state for the last eight years – says Monika Rosa, an MP from the Civic Coalition.

Poland 2050 draws different conclusions from the poor electoral result. “Our electorate does not only expect settlements. It also wants the economy to be repaired,” you can read in the entry by Ryszard Petru, MP of the Third Way, on the “X” platform.

– Anti-PiS and settlements are not everything – says Barbara Oliwiecka, MP from Poland 2050-Third Way.

Lawyers have one piece of advice for the impatient and for politicians

As one might expect, PiS likes this rhetoric, because there are no defendants. – The prosecutor's office aims to substantiate the suspicion of committing a crime and I understand that this is a huge problem – says Zbigniew Kuźmiuk, an MP from Law and Justice.

The government refutes the allegations that nothing is being done about the United Right scandals.

– Three people arrested, huge work on materials and evidence, first waiver of immunity. An announcement of the next ones – mentions Tomasz Siemoniak (KO), Minister of Interior and Administration and coordinator of secret services.

Lawyers have one piece of advice for the impatient and for politicians. – If we are returning to the principles of the rule of law, politicians of all stripes and colors should leave the bodies that are supposed to independently control the law alone. The prosecutor's office, the courts – appeals judge Włodzimierz Wróbel.

Investigations are ongoing. Not only regarding the Justice Fund and the Government Strategic Reserves Agency. Also regarding the withdrawal of PLN 1.5 billion from Orlen, and this is not the end of the list.
