Peru. President Pedro Castillo arrested

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was detained by security forces after the Peruvian parliament voted to resign. Only a few hours earlier, the head of state announced the dissolution of parliament and introduced a state of emergency in the country.

101 out of 130 parliamentarians voted for the resignation of the president. Castillo was accused of being “morally unfit” to lead the state.

Decision to dissolve Congress

Earlier, the left-wing president declared in his address to the nation “temporary dissolution of the Congress of the Republic and the appointment of an emergency government”, as well as “the appointment of a new Congress as soon as possible, equipped with constitutional powers.”

After the impeachment of the president, the parliament called on vice president Dina Boluarte to assume the highest office.

After Castillo’s arrest, Peruvian police tagged him as ex-president on Twitter.
