Police officers from Piaseczno observed the behavior of cyclists moving around the city. They used a drone to help. They fined fourteen cyclists, including two under the influence of alcohol.
Policemen of the Piaseczno traffic department in cooperation with the Specialist Rescue Service carried out activities in which a drone with zoom was used, allowing for accurate observation of the behavior of bicycle drivers in the Piaseczno district.
– During the police activities aimed at the safety of two-wheelers, it turned out that their use of the bicycle infrastructure leaves much to be desired and significantly differs from what the road regulations clearly state. Not everyone remembers about the regulations governing the rules of cycling, said Magdalena Gąsowska from the Poviat Police Headquarters in Piaseczno.
The regulations regarding the traffic of bicycles are precisely described in the Road Traffic Law. However, as the police emphasize, many cyclists do not remember that, among others, Article 33 clearly states that “the driver of a bicycle or an electric scooter is obliged to use a road for bicycles, a road for pedestrians and bicycles or a lane for bicycles”, and at the same time, the cyclist must remember to exercise extreme caution and give way to pedestrians.
Police: the most common offense is driving on the pavement
As emphasized by the police, many cyclists do not comply with road signs, traffic lights, ride on pavements or, even worse, get on a bicycle on “double throttle”, posing a huge threat not only to themselves but above all to other road users. “One of the most common offenses is driving on the sidewalk,” the police officer added. The police remind that, according to the law, it is possible only in three cases.
The first is a situation in which a bicycle rider takes care of a person under the age of 10 who is riding a bicycle. The second is when the width of the sidewalk along the road on which vehicles move at a speed higher than 50 km/h is at least two meters and there is no bicycle path, pedestrian and bicycle path or bicycle lane. The third case allows riding on the pavement when the weather conditions threaten the safety of the cyclist on the road, it may be: snow, strong wind, downpour, black ice or thick fog.
12 cyclists with fines
– During the activities, 12 bicycle drivers received fines for illegal driving, two more were caught driving under the influence of alcohol: a 42-year-old had more than 1.5 per mille of alcohol in his body and a 50-year-old over 1.5 per mille of alcohol in his exhaled air. This state of affairs gives cause for concern. Many cyclists ride recklessly, not signaling the maneuvers they are about to perform – explained Gąsowska.
Police urge caution. – Let us remember that a tragedy on the road is not difficult. Therefore, we appeal for caution when using bicycles and compliance with applicable regulations.
