On the night from Saturday to Sunday, a manor outbuilding, part of the historic palace and park complex in Piekary near Krakow, burned down. No one was hurt, but the damage was serious.

“When the fire brigade arrived, the roof had already collapsed, and the first-floor ceiling had collapsed. The fire-fighting operation lasted 2 hours and 43 minutes. 11 fire brigades were working on site,” said the spokesman for the MaÅ‚opolska State Fire Service, junior captain Hubert CiepÅ‚y, on Sunday. The cause of the fire is being determined.

Palace, school, later hospital

The palace in Piekary in the Liszki commune was built in the mid-19th century in the Italian neo-Gothic style. It was originally a private property. During World War II, the building became the seat of the German authorities. Then, after nationalization, a school was established here, and then a hospital.

The palace complex – the palace, outbuilding, grange (granary with farm buildings), brewery buildings, the statue of the Virgin Mary and the park – are entered in the register of monuments of the MaÅ‚opolska province.
