Firefighters are still working at the Municipal Services Plant in Piotrków Trybunalski, where a huge waste fire occurred on Sunday afternoon. At night, the fire site will be patrolled by firefighters.
The fire broke out on Sunday around 5 p.m. on the premises of the Municipal Services Plant in Piotrków Trybunalski. It covered from five to six thousand square meters. Mainly waste landfills and halls where the segregation process took place were on fire. Plastics and paper were caught on fire. On Sunday evening, firefighters reported that the fire was under control and not spreading.
The waste heap is being poured with water
On Monday morning, nine fire brigades (approximately 40 firefighters) were working on site. – The activities involve pouring water over the garbage heap. – said the spokesman of the Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service in Łódź, Brigadier Jędrzej Pawlak.
After 6 p.m., Pawlak said that the activities would last at least until 8 p.m., and firefighters would patrol the fire site at night. Further operations will resume around 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
It is not known yet what could have caused the fire.
The president calms down
After the fire, the mayor of Piotrków Trybunalski spoke and calmed down the residents at a press conference.
– We want to calm down emotions, there was no fire of any dangerous substances here, because some such information appeared in the public space on social media. This is complete nonsense. As you can see – behind us there is municipal waste – it is paper, it is plastic – we cannot say anything more at the moment, we are waiting for specific information that the fire brigade will provide us – said the mayor of Piotrków, Juliusz Wiernicki. TVN24 reporter Katarzyna Pasikowska-Poczopko said that the city authorities informed at a press conference about 22 sensors operating in the city and that air quality standards were not exceeded. The vice-president of Piotrków Trybunalski, Piotr Kulbat, informed that there is no risk in collecting waste from residents. – According to the message received from the company that operates two waste collection sectors in the city, the collection is not disrupted and the vehicle fleet was not damaged. The reception will proceed smoothly, the vice president assured.
Difficult action and RCB alert
As Brigadier Wojciech Pawlikowski from the fire brigade in Piotrków Trybunalski reported on Sunday around 6 p.m., 14 units of the State Fire Service and Volunteer Fire Brigades from the Piotrków Trybunalski district were operating on site. He said that the provincial commander of the State Fire Service in Łódź had been asked to provide additional forces and resources from outside the Piotrkowski district.
After 9 p.m., firefighters announced that the fire was under control. – The fire is localized, which in firefighting nomenclature means that it is not spreading. We can see tongues of fire inside the hall all the time, there are still sparks there, quite intense in some places. Unfortunately, this is due to the fact that firefighters will have to dismantle part of the hall walls to reach these places. They will not enter the interior through the existing openings for safety reasons – reported TVN24 reporter Piotr Borowski.
On Sunday evening, the Government Security Center issued an alert for residents: “Do not approach the fire site within a radius of 500 m. Close the windows.”
A chemical unit was dispatched to the site, which arrived in the area with a specialized vehicle and examined the air condition.
We received photos and recordings from the fire Contact 24.
