Warsaw’s Law and Justice councilors demand information from the mayor of Warsaw about the funds transferred from the city’s budget to foundations and associations. They also want to know what premises are rented to these organizations at, in their opinion, preferential prices. It is hard to resist the impression that the actions of the councilors are aimed at “covering up” the reportage of tvn24.pl journalists “Willa Plus. Public money for organizations close to PiS”. Journalists described how the Minister of Education, Przemysław Czarnek, provided organizations with very expensive real estate.

The conference of the PiS councilors club in the Warsaw Council was held on Monday in front of the capital city hall. In 2021, PLN 282 million was allocated from the city budget for financing non-governmental organizations for 2,960 various projects.

– A lot of them went to initiatives that are worthy of support and not controversial. However, among this amount, many items raise our doubts – said the head of the Law and Justice club in the Council of Warsaw, Dariusz Figura, and gave the Centrum im. Bronislaw Geremek. – In 2021-22, she received tens of thousands from the city’s coffers. KO activists sit on the foundation’s council, e.g. MEP Róża Thun – he said.

– Training is financed, for example, in urban tactics, which were loud when it turned out that they were of a violent nature, i.e. street aggression – claimed, in turn, Councilor Alicja Żebrowska. The same training was referred to by Błażej Poboży, a PiS councilor from Warsaw, secretary of state at the Ministry of Interior and Administration, during the Saturday program of Radio Zet “6th day of the week”. He then pointed out that it was “left-wing militant activity”, while, as described by “Gazeta Wyborcza”, it was a workshop whose participants learned how to manifest their own views without engaging in violence, how to deal with hatred, hate in protest situations, and to avoid attacks from violent groups.

The councilors of the PiS club submitted an interpellation regarding the financing of non-governmental organizations. – We will demand amounts for the last three years, for which projects these amounts were allocated, what organizations conducted them and in what years – said Dariusz Figura. – We will also submit a more detailed question. I know that many premises at preferential prices are rented out to foundations and associations from the municipal resources. We will also require detailed information in this regard, he added.

“Subsidies were awarded in a transparent way”

Aldona Machnowska-Góra, deputy mayor of the capital, referred to the conference of PiS councilors on Twitter. She wrote that the city awarded 2,960 grants to NGOs in 2021. “Most importantly: in a transparent, fair way as part of open tender competitions and small grants. The third sector and social organizations are one of the most important achievements of free Poland” – she noted.

Aftermath of “Villa Plus”?

Last week, tvn24.pl journalists described how money from the fund of the Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek went to organizations close to PiS. Multi-million subsidies were allocated for the purchase of new premises. At the same time, many educational organizations and educational institutions did not receive a single zloty from the ministry’s budget.
