Plane crash in Nepal. Preliminary report suggests an error by the pilots who inadvertently shut down the engines – media

According to experts, the pilots inadvertently pulled levers that caused both engines to shut down and the plane to crash, local media reported. These are the conclusions of the preliminary report of the commission investigating the crash of the ATR 72-500 plane that crashed in Nepal in January. The document shows that the pilots reported engines not working, even though all parameters remained normal.

The Yeti Airlines plane crashed near Pokhara Airport on January 15. The twin-engined ATR 72-500 machine, approaching for landing, suddenly tilted sideways and fell, hitting the side of the ravine. All 72 people on board died.

Initial crash report

On Wednesday, February 15, a preliminary report on the causes of this disaster was published on the website of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation of Nepal. The Indian media quoted him as saying that the report indicates that the plane lost thrust and fell after both engines had been set to the so-called “off point” setting. the flag, i.e. the propeller blades of the engines, were set with a chord parallel to the air streams. The flag is used by pilots in the event of an engine failure and allows to reduce the resistance of the propeller that does not work properly, and thus slow down the descent.

“The investigation team noticed that when both propellers had their blades set parallel to the incoming air streams (i.e. in the so-called flag – ed.), both 9N-ANC engines were idling simultaneously to prevent excessive torque increase” – indicated in the preliminary in a 14-page report. “The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) indicated that all engine parameters were normal,” it added. Before the crash, the pilots managed to report a problem with the engines, but did not indicate its sources. “When the air traffic controller cleared the landing at 10:57:07, the pilot said twice that both engines had lost power,” the report said.

“It is rare for the propellers on both engines to be feathered,” one of the authors of the report was quoted by the Indian broadcaster NDTV, which belongs to India’s largest media company. This setting works separately for each engine so that it can only be applied to the faulty one. According to NDTV, the findings so far were supposed to lead investigators to suspect that human error led to the disaster.

In aircraft of this type, a special condition lever is responsible for rotating the propeller, setting the propeller in a feather position and controlling the fuel supply for each engine. These assumptions were confirmed by the later finding of these levers in the wreckage of the machine. – The human factor cannot be ruled out in this disaster. Therefore, it is under investigation – confirmed only one of the authors of the report quoted by the station, who wished to remain anonymous.

One of the members of the commission, Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane, in an interview with the Nepali “The Kathmandu Post” also said that experts are also looking at the issue of the flaps, which the pilots were supposed to delay. Lamicchane pointed out that the pilots did not comply with the so-called check list, i.e. procedures ordered to be performed in specific situations.

Yeti Airlines crash in Nepal

The report said the flight that crashed was the third flight between Kathmandu and Pokhara that day by the same aircraft and crew. The commission also determined that the plane, produced in cooperation with the Chinese, was airworthy. The certificate authorizing him to do so was to be valid until April 23, 2023.

The initial report, as required by law, was published within 30 days of the accident. The committee’s final report must be submitted no later than one year after the incident. A commission member quoted by NDTV stressed that before its publication one should not prejudge what led to the tragedy.
