Platform X (formerly Twitter) owned by Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against the non-governmental organization Media Matters for America. Earlier, Media Matters, a media monitoring company, published a report which showed that on the X website, advertisements for well-known brands appeared next to anti-Semitic content.

As the BBC reports on Tuesday, in its lawsuit, the X platform claims that Media Matters for America “manipulated” data in an attempt to “destroy” the website. After the organization published its report, large corporations (including Apple, Disney and IBM) stopped placing their ads on X.

Media Matters announced last week that the ads – including Apple and Oracle – appeared on the X platform alongside comments with anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi content – for example, quotes from Adolf Hitler and statements denying the Holocaust. On Friday, the organization announced that it had identified ads including: Amazon and NBCUniversal corporations next to nationalist and racist hashtags. On Thursday, IBM announced that it was suspending a million-dollar advertising campaign on the website after reports that the company’s ads, as well as those of other companies, appeared next to posts praising Hitler.

As the BBC notes, the lawsuit comes after controversy surrounding Musk’s own comments. Recently, the billionaire supported the statement of one of the Internet users that Jews promote “hatred against whites” and suggested that they are responsible for bringing “hordes of minorities that are flooding the country.” “You told the actual truth,” Musk wrote in response to the user’s post. He later added that “not all Jewish communities” promote “racism against whites and Asians,” but that they do so, among others. Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other Jewish groups.

Musk’s statements were criticized by the White House, which said it condemned “this disgusting promotion of anti-Semitism and racist hatred.” The White House stressed that it is unacceptable to repeat the lies behind the bloodiest act of anti-Semitism in American history – the terrorist attack at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. The conspiracy theory that Jewish groups are behind the importation of other ethnic minorities was the central thesis of the manifesto of terrorist Robert Bowers, who in 2018 murdered 11 people in a synagogue in Pittsburgh. According to the White House, Musk’s words echo the views of the perpetrator of the attack.
