Sony announced that it would lay off 8 percent of employees working in the company responsible for PlayStation, reports the BBC. This translates into approximately 900 jobs.

“This is sad news” and “a difficult day for our company,” Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, a company that produces and sells hardware and software for PlayStation consoles, wrote in an e-mail to employees. “We have concluded that difficult decisions have become inevitable,” he said.

In the email, also posted on the company’s website, Ryan also wrote that “the leadership team and I have made the extremely difficult decision to restructure the business, which unfortunately includes staff reductions that impact very talented individuals who have contributed to our success.”

Ryan previously announced that he would step down as CEO in March 2024, after spending nearly 30 years with the company. As the BBC notes, the cuts may be one of his last significant decisions as Sony’s CEO.

Console sales

The cuts come a month after Microsoft, one of Sony’s biggest rivals, revealed plans to lay off 1,900 people in its gaming division, including recently acquired Activision Blizzard.

PlayStation 5 has sold more than 50 million units worldwide since launch, more than double sales of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S console. At the same time, Nintendo sold almost 140 million copies of its Switch console, which had been released three years earlier.

In a report published in February, Sony said it expected to sell four million fewer consoles by the end of March than originally expected.
