A 38-year-old from Płock was punished for calling the emergency services without any basis. He called the emergency number 112 and reported that his friend had fallen from a sixth-floor window. On site, it turned out to be a stupid joke.

On Tuesday, July 9, the officer on duty at the Płock police station received a report that a man had fallen from a window on the sixth floor.

After a while, all services arrived at the scene: police, ambulance and fire brigade. Officers checked the indicated place. However, it turned out that it was a stupid joke. For an unfounded call to the services, the 38-year-old resident of Płock received a ticket of 500 PLN.

The police appeal for caution when using the emergency number 112. Unjustified calling of the police, ambulance or other services is an offence.

Unjustified call for services in the Code of Petty Offences

According to the Code of Petty Offences, Article 66. § 1. Whoever: 1) intends to provoke unnecessary action, misleads a public utility institution or a body responsible for the protection of public safety, order or health by providing false information or in any other way, 2) intentionally, without a justified reason, blocks an emergency telephone number, hindering the proper functioning of the emergency notification centre shall be subject to the penalty of arrest, restriction of liberty or a fine of up to PLN 1,500.
§2. If the offence resulted in unnecessary action, a fine of up to PLN 1,000 may be imposed.

“In addition to the legal and financial consequences, remember that by blocking the emergency phone, we prevent a person who may really need help from calling. The involvement of services in a fictitious call means that at that time they cannot be in the place where such help is needed,” the police emphasize.
