Yesterday I met in Brussels regarding the granting of public aid to Poczta Polska and consent to it. I have an assurance from the European Commission that such consent will be granted by the middle of the year, said the Minister of State Assets, Borys Budka, in the “Kropka na i” program. In January, alarming information appeared regarding the company’s poor financial situation.

When asked about the situation at Poczta Polska, Borys Budka he replied that “years of neglect” were to blame, as well as “the insertion of PiS nominees who were supposed to conduct envelope elections.”

Budka: I have assurances from the European Commission

However, he announced that he had taken action to improve the situation in the company. – Yesterday I met in Brussels regarding the granting of public aid and consent to it. I have an assurance from the European Commission that such consent will be granted by mid-year, he said.

– Moreover, the EC issued a “comfort letter”, i.e. a special document that allows for such assistance, but unfortunately the president of UKE (Office of Electronic Communications – ed.) did not consider this decision sufficient – he reported.

– We are taking action, here there will also be personnel changes at Poczta Polska, so that professionals can repair Poczta Polska as quickly as possible – he said.

Earlier, Poczta Polska employees and trade unionists pointed out that “the president of UKE is blocking the payment of compensation to Poczta Polska.”

“Poczta Polska treats the comfort letter as a preliminary consent of the European Commission to transfer money. Brussels also claims that a total of PLN 697 million can be paid to the operator for 2021–2022. At the same time, it states that this is a preliminary and informal assessment that does not prejudge the Commission’s decision European Union. Unfortunately, without this decision, UKE does not intend to pay compensation. Why? The Office of Electronic Communications believes that it will violate the law based only on the so-called comfort letter,” trade unionists described.

Problems of the Polish Post

“Rzeczpospolita” wrote in January that the loss of Poczta Polska for 2023 is PLN 787 million, and the company’s management has suspended expenses and investment decisions that are not necessary for the continuity of the Post Office’s operational tasks.

The Ministry of State Assets also confirmed in a statement from January that Poczta Polska is in a difficult financial situation. “Improving the company’s condition is one of the priorities of the Ministry of State Assets,” the ministry assured in a statement. The deputy head of MAP, Jacek Bartmiński, also met with the employee representative on the supervisory board of Poczta Polska and the chairman of the Postal Workers’ Trade Union.
