The several-hour-long police operation in the center of Warsaw has ended. Piłsudskiego Square and surrounding streets were closed to traffic.
In this case, at 2 p.m., a briefing was held by the spokesman of the Warsaw Police Headquarters, sub-inspector. Sylwester Marczak.
– It all started after 10 a.m. The police observed a man running into the monument to the victims of the Smolensk disaster. They approached him, but a very disturbing message appeared, indicating that there was a real threat to the safety of people in Piłsudski Square, he said.
– Hence the very good, quick decision of the police to evacuate the immediate area. At the same time, this information was forwarded to the officer on duty at the Warsaw Police Headquarters and sent to the command’s command, he said.
– We have moved from an action to an operation, this is the highest level of police protection for the activities we can conduct – Marczak said at the briefing.
Marczak: a man was detained
He said that negotiators appeared on the spot. – We had to look at the issue of safety. The negotiations were successful, the man got down and was overpowered – said the spokesman. He added that the man had been detained and police activities would be carried out with him.
The man’s backpack was left at Piłsudski Square. Around 4 p.m., Marczak reported that the backpack had been secured. KSP has not yet announced what was in it.
Marczak did not reveal any details about the man’s motives. He also emphasized that determining them is now of key importance for the police. – The activities are currently carried out by the department combating criminal terror and murders of the capital police. All procedures worked and no one was hurt, emphasized the KSP spokesman.
The police published the first information about the action in the center of Warsaw on the X website.
Due to the closure of J. Piłsudski Square, public transport buses lines 106, 111, 116, 128, 175, 178, 180, 222, 503, 518 were diverted.
