With great pride we all look at you together today – Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the soldiers, speaking during the celebration of the Polish Army Day. – The Miracle at the Vistula will forever be a beautiful reminder of heroism in our hearts, but it should also be a kind of warning – he added.
– With great pride today we all look at you, at our Polish uniforms, at your faces, full of determination and courage, at your attitude every day – said Tusk. – You are the salt of this earth, you are in the hearts of every Poland and every Pole who loves their homeland. It cannot be otherwise – added the head of the Polish government.
Addressing the audience, Tusk recalled that today “we are celebrating the anniversary of a great historical event, which was Poland's victory over the Soviet aggressor”. – A victory not always appreciated, although considered by many in the world to be one of the most important victories in world history – added the prime minister. – We appreciate it – he emphasized.
A souvenir and a warning
Tusk, speaking on behalf of “everyone” – the president, the marshals of the Sejm and Senate, the command – emphasized that “we are doing everything together, together, every day, so that Poland, the Polish army, Polish women and men will never have to count on a miracle in the future.”
– The Miracle at the Vistula will forever be in our hearts a beautiful memento of heroism, extraordinary sacrifice, brilliant leadership, and great morale of the entire nation. But it should also be a kind of warning – said Tusk, emphasizing that in the Polish defense strategy, in the Polish strategy of victory over the enemy, when such a need arises, there can be no room for counting on a miracle. – We have to count on ourselves – appealed the Prime Minister.
Celebrations of the Polish Army Day are underway in Warsaw. Earlier on Thursday, the president Andrzej DudaMarshals of the Sejm and Senate – Szymon Holownia and MaÅ‚gorzata Kidawa-BÅ‚oÅ„ska and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz laid a joint wreath from the nation in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw.
After the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Szymon Hołownia, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also laid wreaths at the monument to Marshal Józef Piłsudski. President Duda also laid a wreath.
A victorious battle
August 15 is the anniversary of the victorious Battle of Warsaw in 1920 for Poland. Polish army It was decisive for maintaining the country's independence and stopped the Bolshevik revolution's march towards Western Europe. It was also one of the most important elements of the historical memory of the Second Polish Republic.
August 15 was declared Polish Army Day in 1923. It remained so until 1947. Since 1992, Polish Army Day has again been celebrated in mid-August.
