NATO should strongly and emphatically emphasize that it does not allow the invasion of green men in Poland, as in the Crimea – said General Roman Polko, former commander of the GROM special unit. He stressed that a strong blockade of Russia and Belarus by European Union countries is also needed. – The destabilization of Europe and our region is aimed at distracting attention from what is happening in Ukraine or the Middle East, where Putin launches his next offensives. When Europe is busy with migrants, another breakthrough will probably take place there, as happened in Georgia, Donbas or Crimea, commented the general.
On Friday, the Ministry of National Defense announced that further provocations took place on the Polish-Belarusian border – one of the Belarusian soldiers tried to fire a signal pistol, but the weapon did not fire. The Ministry of National Defense also informed that 100 meters away five armed Belarusians tried to destroy the fence, shouting at the same time that they would shoot Polish soldiers. After summoning additional forces of the army and the Border Guard to the site, Belarusians withdrew, it was underlined.
On Wednesday, the spokesman of the minister for the special services coordinator, Stanisław Żaryn, informed on Twitter that on Tuesday night Polish soldiers noticed three uniformed people with long weapons, who – after trying to make contact – reloaded their weapons and departed towards Belarus.
However, on Thursday, the Ministry of National Defense informed that on Wednesday “There was another provocation against Polish soldiers serving on the border. The military located a group of around 250 migrants near the fence. The Belarusian soldiers who were guarding them threatened to open fire at our soldiers “- informed the Ministry of Defense.
“There is a fear that such situations may get out of hand”
When asked about these events, the former commander of the GROM special unit, General Roman Polko, assessed that the situations related to aiming weapons at Poles by uniformed persons on the Belarusian side were very dangerous. “In combat, if someone were aiming a gun at me, I would have fired a shot,” he said.
At the same time, he noted that the experience of Polish border guards and soldiers, as well as knowledge of the conditions, allow them to react to this type of provocation in a correct way. – They certainly do not want to aggravate the situation, but there is a fear that such situations may get out of hand, and this is what the Lukashenka regime is all about – he assessed.
Gen. Polko: a decisive reaction from NATO is needed
According to the former commander of the GROM special unit, a reaction in this matter is needed on the part of NATO and the Alliance member states. – The eastern border of Poland is the eastern border of NATO. The alliance should strongly and emphatically emphasize that it does not allow the invasion of green men here, as in the Crimea. International conventions say that a border guard or a soldier with a weapon, but without uniform markings, can be treated like a common bandit and such a warning should be directed – that this thin red line has already been crossed – General Polko said.
In his opinion, the position of NATO in this matter is all the more necessary as many planes carrying migrants reach Belarus from, among others, the territory of Turkey, which is a NATO member.
– We also need a strong blockade of Russia and Belarus by the European Union countries, because all this destabilization of Europe and our region is aimed at distracting attention from what is happening in Ukraine or the Middle East, where Putin launches his next offensives. When Europe is busy with migrants, another breakthrough will probably take place there, as was the case in Georgia, Donbas or Crimea, he assessed.
General Polko: every soldier at the border is needed there
In the opinion of the Polish general, the help of the army at the border is now necessary, because our Border Guard has not dealt with such problems as currently occur in Belarus. In his opinion, however, such experience has the military, which during foreign missions in the former Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan had the opportunity to encounter the actions of “bandits who used blackmail with the help of women and children”.
According to him, “until this dam is built together with electronic sensors, which will be able to stop this migration wave, controlled by the Belarusian services, then every soldier who is there is needed to seal the border.” – Only after the dam is built, it will be possible to loosen tight army units, leaving this area under the control of the Border Guard – he added.
General Polko assessed that the Territorial Defense Forces, whose soldiers know the area and local conditions, are doing very well in the border region. – But if we are dealing with situations in which green men enter the territory of Poland, it would be at least strange if our special forces were not already conducting a counteroffensive, because the best response to the actions of saboteurs are the actions of saboteurs on the other hand, i.e. the actions of specialties – added.
Dam on the border with Belarus
Thursday the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration Mariusz Kamiński announcedthat the five-meter steel fence will be erected on the border with Belarus by the middle of next year.
The dam along the border with Belarus will be erected over a length of 180 kilometers in Podlasie. The Bug River is a natural dam in the Lublin region. On the border, there will be a five-meter-long steel fence topped with a half-meter coil of barbed wire – in total, the dam will be 5.5 meters high. Along the border there will be motion sensors as well as day and night cameras.
Since the spring, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian border with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions has increased sharply. The EU and its member states believe that this is the result of deliberate actions by Belarus in response to the sanctions. Since the beginning of the year, the Border Guard has recorded over 30,000 attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border. Since September 2, due to the migration pressure, 183 localities in the Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodeships, adjacent to the border with Belarus, have been under a state of emergency.
Journalists are not allowed to work in the area of the state of emergency, which makes it impossible to verify the reports coming from there. The media is forced to rely solely on official messages and messages.
