There is a state of emergency on the Polish-Belarusian border. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that in connection with the “organized action” by the authorities in Minsk, the Polish side would defend the border “with all determination”. The deputy head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Bartosz Grodecki, said that our country had sufficient forces and resources to secure the border areas. He added that it was not necessary for the time being to use the assistance of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).
On Monday, RMF FM, citing unofficial findings, informed that the European Union – after reports of the death of migrants at the Polish-Belarusian border – wants Frontex to be there. According to RMF FM, Frontex has expressed its readiness to assist in border protection.
Grodecki said in an interview with PAP that Poland has the strength and means to secure the Polish-Belarusian border on its own. He also recalled the last statement of the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Mariusz Kamiński, who assured that in the coming days about 500 soldiers would be delegated to protect the border.
– Much forces and resources have been involved, greater than Frontex could provide – emphasized Grodecki. He also added that so far there has been no official proposal of the European Commission regarding assistance from Frontex.
Kamiński: we still have to firmly defend our border
On Monday, after the Border Guard Command’s briefing attended by Morawiecki and Kamiński, a press conference during which the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration informed about the increase of forces on the Polish-Belarus border. – We still have to firmly defend our border and the security of our citizens, therefore we are increasing the strength of soldiers’ participation in border protection – he said.
– In the coming days, about 500 soldiers will be delegated to further tighten the network of our border patrols – said the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration.
State of emergency at the border
On Sunday, the Border Guard informed that the bodies of people who had crossed the border had been found in the border zone. On Monday, Maj. Gen. Tomasz Praga said that the bodies of three migrants were found on the Polish side, and as far as the Polish Border Guard is known, the body of one person – a woman – was found on the Belarusian side.
From September 2, a state of emergency has been in force in the border zone with Belarus, in some of the Podlaskie and Lubelskie provinces. It covers 183 towns. It was introduced for 30 days.
