On Monday, August 12, the sponsor of the Polish Olympic team, Grupa Profbud, announced that not only the winner of the gold medal at the Paris Games – Aleksandra Mirosław – will receive a prize for her achievement apartment. Silver medalists in individual starts will also receive a fully furnished apartment. Let us recall that they are: Klaudia Zwolińska, Julia Szeremeta and Daria Pikulik. Silver medalists from Paris are to receive apartments. What about gift tax?
The fact that the prizes in the form of apartments from the developer may turn out to be a big problem was reported “Business Insider”. Olympians may have to pay tax from a donation. According to the Personal Income Tax Act, the prizes awarded to Olympians and Paralympians are exempt from such a fee. However, the portal cited the opinion of Grant Thornton analysts, who indicated that in the interpretation of the director of the National Revenue Information, from November 2023, the exemption from taxation applies only to cash prizes.
For Zwolińska, Szeremeta and Pikulik, this may mean having to pay the equivalent of 10 percent of the price of the apartment. “The problem is that the tax on the prize in kind must be paid to the organizer before the prize is collected. In the case of Olympic medalists, 'appropriate agreements regulating the rules and conditions of awarding prizes' may be concluded, which may affect the form of payment of prizes,” the portal pointed out.
