POLSA, the Polish Space Agency, has entered into an agreement with the United States National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA). Thanks to it, Poland will be able to take part in multilateral NASA programs regarding the exploration of, among others, the Moon and Mars.
As reported by the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), the so-called Artemis Accords is an international agreement that defines the framework for cooperation in the civil exploration and peaceful use of the Moon, Mars and other celestial bodies. “This is another important step in building Poland’s cooperation with the United States,” the Agency emphasized in a release sent to PAP.
POLSA has signed an agreement with NASA. “Another important step”
According to POLSA, the agreement gives Polish institutions and enterprises the opportunity to participate in the Artemis program conducted by NASA, concerning the return of people to the moon and the expansion of space exploration. Thus, Poland joined other Artemis Accords signatories, such as: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Ukraine, UAE and Great Britain.
The President of POLSA Grzegorz Wrochna stated that Polish companies and institutions have been successfully cooperating for years, incl. from NASA, ESA, DLR JAXA and CNSA. – Only in the last 40 years, over 80 instruments designed and constructed by Polish scientists and engineers have been used in various international space missions – he emphasized. He added that the decade of participation in the European Space Agency “resulted in a dynamic development of the Polish space sector, in which more than 350 Polish companies already operate”.
According to Wrochna, Poland’s accession to Artemis Accords is “another important step in developing the potential of the Polish space sector in the international arena”.
As announced by POLSA, the next step in building Polish-American relations will be the Framework Agreement on Space Cooperation between the Republic of Poland and the USA, on which work is currently underway.
The provisions of Artemis Accords refer to the 1967 UN Space Treaty and the main UN conventions, which form the basis of international space law, explained PAK. She added that this is an agreement “which gives Poland the opportunity to participate in NASA’s multilateral programs for the exploration of the Moon, Mars and other celestial bodies”.
The agreement was signed by the President of the Polish Space Agency Grzegorz Wrochna in the presence of Pamela A. Melroy, Deputy Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency of the United States, during the 72nd International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
