Walkers spotted a seal on the beach in Ustka on Sunday. We received a recording of the animal on Kontakt 24. – She was resting and looked emaciated – said Paweł Żmuda from the WWF Blue Patrol.

– We received a report of a seal on the beach early in the morning. It appeared on the eastern side of the port canal, right next to the pier. We secured it for two hours, and then it was scared away by tourists – said Paweł Żmuda, local leader of the WWF Blue Patrol, in an interview with tvnmeteo.pl. This is an adult gray seal.

As he continued, the seal “entered the water, swam for some time, and then came out again.” She was visible on the beach until about 8 p.m.

“She looked emaciated”

“She looked gaunt and was resting,” he said. He explained that without longer observation it is impossible to determine the causes of the animal's condition.

– Seals, like any other animals, get sick. They often come ashore to rest and dry their fur, added Żmuda.

What to do when you see a seal on the beach

There are three species of these marine mammals in the Baltic Sea: the gray seal (Halichoerus grypus), ringed seal (Phoca hispida) and common seal (Phoca vitulina). They lead an aquatic lifestyle. Remember not to get close to them. Like any wild animal that is frightened, a seal can be aggressive.

If you see that an animal is sick, weakened or has visible wounds – or even if it is dead – you should immediately notify the specialists of the WWF Blue Patrol or the Marine Station of the University of Gdańsk in Hel, who will advise you what to do and, if necessary, take further steps.
