Pope Francis told reporters that he is ready to do everything possible for peace in Ukraine. He added that a mission is currently underway in the matter, but did not provide further information on this.
Francis spoke to journalists on board the plane from Budapest to Rome. He assured that he was ready to do everything possible for peace in Ukraine. He then added that a peacekeeping mission is currently underway, the details of which have not yet been made public.
Asked if he discussed the possibility of mediation on Ukraine with the Prime Minister Hungarian Viktor Orban and the Orthodox Metropolitan of Budapest Hilarion from the Moscow Patriarchate, Francis replied: – During these meetings we did not only talk about Little Red Riding Hood. “Peace is always built by opening channels, not by closing them,” he said.
The Pope also expressed the opinion that help would be possible the Vatican on Ukrainian children abducted to Russia. He reminded that the Holy See had already acted as an intermediary in the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed that he had always had good relations with the Russian ambassador to the Holy See.
