Bobi turned 31 on Thursday and is the oldest dog in the world. A group of foreign veterinary specialists came to the village of Conqueiros, near the Portuguese city of Leiria, where the quadruped lives, to investigate the secret of his longevity. According to some experts, the secret may lie in the pet’s diet.

Bobi was born on May 11, 1992. He is a Portuguese guard dog. He lives in Conqueiros near the city of Leiria in central Portugal

The dog’s owner, Leonel Costa, invited several foreign researchers of the phenomenon of animal longevity, including the American veterinary scientist Karin Becker, to the dog’s birthday celebration organized over the weekend. They devoted their stay to carrying out a study on the health of a 31-year-old dog.

Diet secret?

According to an expert from the USA, the secret of a Portuguese pet’s long life may lie in its nutrition. – Bobi regularly eats good quality human food. However, meals do not contain spices. They are also devoid of preservatives and synthetic ingredients, Becker noted.

The American specialist emphasized that the value of meals eaten by the oldest dog in the world is also their great variety. – Bobi eats not only poultry or pork, but also fish, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Importantly, he receives such varied meals every day – she pointed out.

“Perhaps there is a genetic factor”

According to veterinarian and researcher Peter Dobias, who came to celebrate the elderly dog’s birthday from Canada, his longevity may be influenced by a combination of various factors. – Bobi lives in the countryside, walks without a chain, has a relatively stress-free environment, regular meals and loving carers. Perhaps the genetic factor also has an impact on the unusual longevity of a dog, Dobias said.

The owner of the dog, Leonel Costa, told journalists invited to the birthday party that Bobi’s genetic tests would be published in about two months.

Listed in the Guinness Book of Records, in recent years, Costa explained, his health had deteriorated. In 2018, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. “Thanks to the support we received from several veterinarians at the time, Bobi is still with us,” said the dog’s owner.

The man added that by June his pet would be visited by “a large group of enrolled scientists” exploring the secret of his longevity.
