In Portugal c. As a result of the disaster, 160 people, most of them firefighters, were injured, the country’s civil defense said on Thursday. The fire killed at least one person. Three arsonists have been detained since Sunday.

Portugal is struggling with fires that have lasted a week. The fight with the element is made difficult by high temperatures, sometimes reaching 45 degrees Celsius. Authorities say that the fire consumed more than four thousand hectares of land.

According to information from Portuguese services, the arrests were carried out in the northern and central parts of the country, the regions most affected by the fires. Two men aged 45 and 47 from the vicinity of the cities of Santa Maria da Feira and Santarem and an 83-year-old resident of Guimaraes were caught.

According to the head of civil defense, Andre Fernandes, out of 160 injured by fires, four are in a serious condition. He also confirmed the death of a woman near the city of Aveiro, where fires had raged in recent days.

The spread of the fire is limited – said Mieczysław Cicha, a Pole living in Portugal. ‘Unfortunately, there are many other hot spots of inflammation all over Portugal,’ she added. As Ms Mieczysław noted, the Portuguese know very well that controlling a fire is not synonymous with its final restraint. – A gust of air is enough, suddenly it sparkles, and the fire breaks out again – she emphasized.

Fires in Portugal

According to information from the Portuguese Ministry of the Interior, firefighters fought 17 fires on Thursday afternoon, the largest of which was raging around the city of Ourem, in the central part of the country. Due to the threat, over half a thousand people were evacuated there.

The government in Lisbon said that two firefighting planes from Italy are to arrive in the country on Thursday, supporting the fire department.
