Portugal. Russian warships in waters under Portuguese jurisdiction

Two Portuguese navy frigates approached three ships of the Russian navy that had entered waters under Portuguese jurisdiction. Representatives of the Military Academy in Lisbon assessed that some Russian units “examined the Atlantic region, at the bottom of which there are networks for transmitting telecommunications data” connecting North America with Europe. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Portuguese army has sent patrol units several times to monitor the course of the ships of the Russian navy.

The naval command in Lisbon announced on Friday that two frigates had been sent to two ships of the Russian navy. It specified that the task of the Portuguese forces was to monitor the course of Russian ships and prevent them “from taking actions that would harm Portugal.” It added that the frigates assigned to the mission are NRP Mondego and NRP Setubal.

Russian vessels entered the waters of the exclusive economic zone Portugal a few days ago. This area is located in three places in the Atlantic: on the shores of mainland Portugal, as well as around its two autonomous regions: Madeira and the Azores.

The Portuguese command explained that among the Russian units that appeared in the waters under Portuguese jurisdiction are: the AORL Kama freighter, the ATS Sergei Balk tug and the Kilo II SSG-490 Ufa submarine.

Patrol units have already checked Russian ships several times
