From January 1, a tourist tax will come into force in the Portuguese Azores. Local authorities explain that the introduction of the fee is related to the growing expenditure of municipalities on maintaining cleanliness and tourist infrastructure.

The stay fee will be charged on the main island of this archipelago – Sao Miguel. As announced on Wednesday by the president of the Association of Azorean Municipalities (AMRAA), Alexandre Gudencio, the local governments of the island approved introduction of a tourist tax of 2 euros per night.

– The tax was introduced to shift the costs from local residents to tourists – emphasized Gaudencio.

A local government official quoted by the local daily “Acoriano Oriental” explained that the reason for introducing the tax is the increasing expenditure of Azorean municipalities in connection with maintaining cleanliness and tourist infrastructure.
