The rescue operation was launched after a report from the captain of a merchant ship sailed under the flag Malty, the naval command specified in a statement sent to the Lusa agency Portugal.
According to representatives of the Portuguese army, the rescue operation concerned 63-year-old citizen Polishwhich was located on – bulk carrier MIEDWIE. It is part of the fleet Polish Maritime Shipping Company (PÅ»M)even though it flies the Maltese flag.

The alert regarding a man in need of medical assistance, according to the rescue services report, was issued when the unit was located in territorial waters Portugal, near the Azores archipelago.
Transported by helicopter to the hospital at the Lajes military base, on the island of Terceira, the man had, according to the Portuguese army, serious cardiac problems.
