General Prosecutor’s Office Portugal recognized Prime Minister Antonio Costa as suspected of abuse of power in connection with a corruption scandal, Portuguese media reported on Friday, citing law enforcement documents.

The documents show that the head of the socialist government was aware that the new regulations on urban planning and construction approved by his cabinet in October 2023 would be beneficial to one of the companies. Its owner, according to the investigation, has close relations with the ruling Portuguese Socialist Party (PS).

Costa resigned

On November 7, Costa unexpectedly announced that he intended to resign, stating in general terms that he was under investigation by the prosecutor’s office. Soon, the police announced that in the office of Vitor Escaria, the head of the prime minister’s office, officers found PLN 75.8 thousand. euros in cash.

As a result of the corruption scandal, the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, accepted Costa’s resignation and announced the dissolution of parliament, as well as the date of early elections. They will take place on March 10.
