Poznań. A 5-year-old attacked on the street has died. Employees of the waste collection company helped stop the attacker

It was 10 a.m. when the children left the kindergarten building in Poznań. They were going to the post office, less than half a kilometer away. They were supposed to send letters on the occasion of Polish Post Day, which was a few days ago.

They reached the nearest intersection when an elderly man with a knife attacked one of the children. He injured a 5-year-old boy in the chest area.

Witnesses to the incident reacted immediately – the man had his knife taken away and was overpowered. An employee of the Remondis waste collection company and an off-duty policewoman who happened to be nearby were involved in his arrest.

The recording from the garbage truck shows the moment when Remondis employees run to the site of the incident.

According to Grzegorz Konopczyński, a foreman from Remondis, when the team was driving down the street, the employees heard disturbing screams and crying. – The children were crying terribly, the kindergarten teachers were also screaming for help, and the boy was lying – he said.

He asked the question: what happened? He heard: he stabbed the child with a knife.

– The kindergarten teachers provided help, everyone was focused on the child, but no one was focused on this thug – said Mr. Grzegorz.

When he heard the attacker running down the street, he and his friends immediately ran towards him. – There were a lot of onlookers, but there were no heroes to stop. People had some sticks or brooms. When he was running, it was enough to put a stick between his legs to make him fall… It turned out that I reacted and ran – he reported.

He saw a woman – as it later turned out – a policewoman, who was negotiating with the attacker. – He had a knife in his hand and she was talking to him. I came up behind him and just hit him in the calf. At that moment he lost his balance, leaned over and while he was leaning over, I hit him in the rib with my knee. Then he dropped the knife and I pushed him away, Konopczyński said.

Together with his friends and a policewoman, they overpowered the man. When he was already immobilized, he returned to the injured 5-year-old.

– I was more concerned about this child. There was non-stop resuscitation there. I kept my fingers crossed for this child, but as you can see, it didn’t work out – said Mr. Grzegorz in a breaking voice.

The boy was first provided with first aid by witnesses and then by the crew of two ambulances. – When he was taken to the hospital, he had signs of life – said Andrzej Borowiak, spokesman for the Greater Poland police.

He died in the operating theater. – The child was saved by many emergency medical teams from my hospital. Today there really were angels trying to rescue this little child from the clutches of death. However, the wounds were so serious that there was simply no chance. This is a little boy who has very little blood and such a large injury that damaged the main vessels means that medicine is simply powerless – said Prof. Ph.D. n. med. The man suspected of the attack is 71-year-old Zbysław C. – a resident of one of the nearby tenement houses. – The man has never had a criminal record or criminal record – Borowiak said.

Rescuers had to help the man – he complained of shortness of breath.

– The detained man is staying at the HCP hospital in Poznań. The tests have already been completed. Now the police are waiting for the doctors’ decision on whether he will be detained in hospital or placed in police custody, the police spokesman said.

– It is not known why this man behaved this way – Borowiak said in front of the TVN24 camera. He added that there is no information that any child from the group has any family ties with the 71-year-old.
