Fallen trees, broken benches, damaged lamps – this is what the New Zoo in Poznań looks like after the storm that passed over the city. From Friday morning, the effects of a violent wind are being removed. The garden is closed to visitors.
A strong wind in Poznań blew on Thursday morning, but in the afternoon it was getting stronger. – We knew that there was a warning against violent winds, so we secured the animals, especially the dangerous ones, already around 2 p.m. – says Małgorzata Chodyła, press spokesman for the Poznań zoo.
As he explains, it is a permanent procedure that they implement in every situation of this type.
An hour later, it was decided to close the garden. – When the branches began to fall, the trains running around the zoo were stopped and we evacuated visitors to the exit with their cars – he explains.
Hole in the lion’s fence
Several trees broke during the storm. One of them fell on the fence of the enclosure for lions, luckily the animals were not there anymore – their keepers had previously locked them in the building.
The lions will not come out on the run for now, it will only be possible after the fence has been repaired.
The entire garden is being cleaned. Fallen trees and falling limbs destroyed, among others benches and lamps.
– Our foresters work from 6-7 am, we need more time to check the whole area for broken branches that could just fall off – says Chodyła. As he reminds, the New Zoo in Poznań covers 120 hectares, mainly of forest.
On Saturday, the garden is to function normally. – We open at 9 o’clock – announced the spokeswoman.
