He was transporting over half a million illegal cigarettes on the bus. They were packed in dozens of cardboard boxes. The 52-year-old was arrested and charged. He faces a very heavy fine.

Police officers from the Warsaw Department for Combating Economic Crime made operational arrangements in connection with information about a person who may be in possession of large amounts of illegal cigarettes.

– The car, which was driven by the man they selected, was inspected at Kraśnicka Street in Targówek. In the loading part of the Opel, the operational officers found several dozen boxes filled with excise-free cigarettes. They secured the illegal goods and detained the 52-year-old. In the course of further activities, they determined the addresses, including the place of residence of the 52-year-old, where they also carried out searches, reports Kom. The detained man was taken to the police station at Jagiellońska Street. There, the bus and the secured cigarettes were also inspected. It turned out that there are 508 thousand of them.

– Police officers from the Department for Combating Economic Crime and Corruption of the North Praga Headquarters performed further procedural activities related to the arrest of the 52-year-old. The analysis they conducted showed that the depletion for the State Treasury due to unpaid excise tax is over PLN 620,000 – adds Kom. Paulina Onyszko.

Charges and threat of heavy fines

On the basis of the evidence collected in the case, the investigators interrogated the detainee and charged him with the storage and transfer of tobacco products, contrary to the provisions of the Act, without prior marking them with excise stamps.

This offense is punishable by a fine of up to 720 daily rates, imprisonment, or both.

The fine is set in daily rates – the lowest is 10 and the highest is 720. The daily rate may not be lower than 1/30 of the minimum wage or exceed 400 times this part. In the first half of 2023 the lowest daily rate is PLN 116.33, and the highest PLN 46,532la. And that means that the maximum fine may range from PLN 83 thousand 756.60 to PLN 33 million 503 thousand and PLN 40.
