“Prawko” to learn without grades and homework. Principal priest: the point is to teach, not to frighten
He compares learning at school to that of a driving course. Because – as he says – it is not what you know at the beginning that counts, but how you ride the exam. Therefore, in the high school she runs, there are no grades anymore – they are replaced by percentages. He agreed the revolution at school with all interested parties and consulted with the creator of video games. He introduced it despite the pandemic. Because, as befits a director, he had steadfast faith that he would succeed.
The measure of a pandemic. Remote learning. Was it a good time for a revolution?
Father Michał Kiersnowski, even before introducing changes in the school he leads, answered without a moment’s thought: – From September, we go deep into the water and implement the change. Everyone – teachers, students and parents – will be learning the new grading system. I am convinced that everything will go well and that other schools will follow our path.
– Managed to? – I ask after a year.
– Introducing changes during the pandemic was a bull’s eye – he assures.
Old as school
Father Michał Kiersnowski recommends me to visit the Museum of the Mazovian Countryside in Sierpc. The open-air museum is located near the Bishop Leon Wetmanski Catholic Secondary School – a school of which he has been the headmaster for eight years.
– People visit the open-air museum, look at agricultural equipment, wonder what it is, what it was used for. Until they enter the school room and say: Oh, this is a school! Because there are desks, a blackboard, a place for a teacher. Now, instead of a blackboard, there is a monitor or a screen, and the benches are more comfortable. But the system has not changed for one hundred or two hundred years. It is outdated and anachronistic, and requires a major overhaul. Because the world is changing – assesses the priest.
And although the Minister of Education, Przemysław Czarnek recently in “Nasz Dziennik” said: “We want to rebuild the ethos of the teacher, strengthening his authority and position in school. for others an example. And so, for a year there have been no ones, doubles, threes, fours, fives and sixes in school. They were replaced by percentages.
