President Andrzej Duda referred to the bill adopted by the Sejm on Thursday, according to which the morning-after pill is to be available without a prescription for people over 15 years of age. In his opinion, the new regulations mean that it should be “uncontrolled” and that it is a “very controversial idea”. He described the pill itself as a “hormone bomb”. He noted that he would make a decision on this matter only when the bill reaches his desk.

On Thursday, the Sejm adopted an amendment to the act on emergency contraception, i.e. the so-called “morning-after pill”. According to the regulations contained therein, it is to be available without a prescription for people over 15 years of age.

Since July 2017, morning-after pills in Poland are only available by prescription.

President: the morning-after pill is a hormonal bomb

President Andrzej Duda he was asked on Polsat News whether he would sign this bill.

– I would like to remind you that at the request of dermatology specialists, I reported and passed a law limiting access to solariums for persons under 18 years of age as a presidential bill. For solariums, not for the hormonal bomb that this pill is, he said. When asked whether he believed this contraceptive was really a “hormone bomb”, the president replied: – Yes, it is.

– Of course, as always, I will say that I will consider every bill when it reaches my desk, this bill is still going to the Senate, but I will say this: the pill is available today – he said. In response to the comment that it was about availability without a prescription, the president said that “today it is under control.” – And the point here is that it should be uncontrolled. Don’t you think this is a very controversial idea? – He was asking.

He declined to answer a question about whether he would sign the bill if it was amended by the Senate to make the pill available over the counter to people 18 and older. – Let’s wait for the law – he replied briefly.

Manipulative theses

In the public discussion about the morning-after pill, also conducted by politicians, the alleged dangers and effects of taking it are often discussed. There are many false and manipulative claims made about this measure. Konkret24, based on doctors’ knowledge, explained in its text what the effect of the morning-after pill is.

The morning-after pill is a type of emergency contraception, i.e. used in exceptional situations. Its purpose is to prevent pregnancy. It prevents this by “causing changes in the uterine mucosa, preventing the embryo from implanting in the uterus” – explained gynecologist Grzegorz Mrugacz, MD, PhD, medical director of the Bocian Clinic, in an interview with tvn24.pl.

Konkret24 also corrects false claims, including that the morning-after pill is an early abortion pill, that it kills the fetus if the woman is pregnant, and that it is dangerous for women under 18.
