President Andrzej Duda said on Monday that an agreement was reached on ambassadors, because the head of the ministry Radosław Sikorski restores the standard procedure, which begins with the initial acceptance of the presidential candidacy. The conflict on the MSZ-President's line regarding ambassadors began in March 2024.

The president emphasized that there is an agreement on this matter. – There is an agreement on this matter because the Minister of Foreign Affairs restores this standard procedure, which begins with the initial acceptance of the presidential candidacy – said Duda. He added that he is ready to conduct ambassador nomination procedures, “because it is not about blocking them, but not to violate the President's constitutional prerogatives.”

Duda said that in previous years the initial acceptance by the president was crucial in the process of nominating ambassadors and assessed that “the government of Prime Minister Tusk in the part administered by Minister Sikorski” tried to “destroy” this right. He noted that in the event of the president's consent at the beginning of this process, this prerogative loses its meaning.

Duda: The next president will come in a moment

– Then the president is placed against the wall, because the Sejm Commission (foreign affairs – ed.) Said because the candidate has already obtained Agrément, and then the president does not want to sign, this is a great problem, yes? Duda said.

As he noted, he could not agree to the “breaking” of this prerogative from the President's hands by the government, because of others who would perform this position. “Another president will come in a moment and he would be deprived of it,” he said.

Duda announced that the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs knows his reservations and their motivations about some candidates. However, he noted that most nominations are able to sign.

He added that if the relevant documents go to his desk, he would take appropriate steps in this matter. “The government simply returned to a normal, honest, reliable procedure that has always been implemented,” said the president.

A dispute about ambassadors

The conflict on the MSZ-President's line regarding ambassadors began in March 2024, when Minister Sikorski decided that over 50 ambassadors would end the mission, and several candidates submitted for approval by the previous management of the ministry will be withdrawn.

After the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrzej Duda announced that “no Polish ambassador can be appointed or dismissed without the president's signature.” Due to the lack of agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in place of the dismissed ambassadors, the president refused to nominate successors.
