The next Starship test flight, Megarakieta from Spacex, is to take place tonight. It will be the ninth attempt to start. The previous two ended with spectacular explosions.

According to Spacex, the starting window is to be opened on May 27 at 18.30 local time – in Poland there will be 1.30 on Wednesday. It will be the ninth attempt with the participation of Megarakieta from SpaceX. During the previous two starts, a huge machine broke up in the air, creating a spectacular rain of falling shards.

Last, The eighth start of the rocket took place on March 7. During the flight after a few minutes there was a failure. The station lost control of the vehicle, which began to rotate in the air at an altitude of about 145 kilometers above the ground. A moment later, connectivity with a flying ship was lost, which broke up in the air, creating rain of falling fragments resembling fireworks.

“Mile Stone” with the participation of Super Heavy

During the ninth test flight, the Super Heavy booster will be used again, which has already been used in an earlier flight and has been successfully landed. This will be the first such situation, and in the SpaceX communication it pointed out that it is a “milestone”.

As emphasized, the conclusions drawn from the first renovation of the booster and its subsequent action in flight will allow you to prepare future starts faster. The goal is to develop space vehicles that do not require any manual service between starts.

Flight experiments

Booster will also perform several experiments in flight to collect data on the performance of future flight profiles and scenarios different from the norm. It will be checked, among others A new approach to a return, in which the booster will fall at an angle that increases air resistance, which will reduce the amount of fuel needed for landing.

During the super heavy landing maneuver itself, unique engine configurations will be demonstrated. One of the three central engines used in the final phase of landing will be deliberately turned off to collect data on the spare engine of the engine from the inner ring to complete the maneuver. In addition, in the final phase of landing, Booster will go to work only two central engines, which will be turned off on the Mexican Bay, and the vehicle will end the flight with hard launch.

“Development tests are unpredictable by definition”

In turn, the second stage of Starship is to repeat its suborbital trajectory, but it will achieve goals that have not been achieved during the previous two tests. This is, among others, the first release of the load in space (eight Starlink satellite simulators) and numerous experiments related to re -entering the atmosphere, testing the engine in space and returning the ship to the starting site.

When the atmosphere returns, new thermal protection solutions will also be tested, including metal tiles with active cooling. The Starship input profile into the atmosphere has been designed to intentionally load the rear aircraft of the vehicle to the limits.

“Development tests are unpredictable by definition. However, by placing equipment in flight conditions as often as possible, we can quickly learn and make changes to the project, striving to launch Starship as a vehicle that allows a full and quick multiple use” – emphasizes Spacex.
