The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection has initiated explanatory proceedings regarding the evolution of fuel prices – said the President of the Office, Tomasz Chróstny, during a press conference. As the head of the regulator pointed out, it may take several weeks

– The fuel market is under constant monitoring (…). We have initiated an investigation. We want to explain this situation, analyze it. We are looking into this matter – Chróstny said at the conference. He added that the process could take several weeks.

As Chróstny pointed out, the proceedings are conducted in the case and not against someone. President UOKiK informed that the Office requested information and data, which are the basis for shaping fuel prices on the market; in the first place to the largest entities on the fuel market.

Chróstny noted that next week UOKiK would ask for more data. “We want to explain the situation in detail,” he said. – These types of situations always require analysis and a thorough look at the facts. We must be based on facts – said the president. The rigor of the procedure gives UOKiK access to reliable information, he noted.

Prices at Orlen stations

From January 1, 2023, the excise duty and fuel surcharge increased (by approx. PLN 0.14/l of gasoline and PLN 0.10/l of diesel, respectively), and the rate VAT returned to the level before the anti-inflation shield – 23 percent. from 8 percent

According to earlier information, PKN Orlen will demand an explanation of its pricing policy, among others Civic Coalition. Applications to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) for examining Orlen’s fuel price policy are also to be submitted by local government officials.

CEO on Tuesday Daniel Obajtek said that PKN Orlen is a multi-energy concern that stabilizes fuel prices in the country. As he pointed out, if the company did not communicate that it would try to maintain prices with the increase in VAT, panic could break out on the market.
