The press office of Prime Minister Canada Marek Carney has announced that the new agreement in economic matters and security between Canada and the US will be concluded within 30 days. Carney also talked to representatives of the European Union about increased cooperation.
During the summit of the G7 leaders in Kananaskis in Alberta, Prime Minister of Canada Marek Carney with the president talked USA Donald Trump on the subject of “current trade problems and priorities”, and its effect is to agree that negotiations will continue “to conclude a contract within 30 days” – said the press office of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Other topics of the conversation are critical minerals, smuggling of weapons and drugs, the safety of the common border and the possibilities of cooperation in the field of defense.
Among the duties imposed by Trump to Canada are also duties on Canadian products, including 50 percent. Customs duties and aluminum and 10 percent for energy raw materials, as well as duties on automotive production.

Trump previously told journalists that the US trade agreement with Canada could be agreed, although he and Prime Minister Canada have “other concepts” of its shape. He added that he himself “likes duties” but Carney has a “more complex idea.”

Since 2020, Cusma has been in force between Canada, the USA and Mexico, a amended free trade agreement between the three countries. In 2026, work is to be started on reviewing its provisions. Carney led before the formal start of the summit of the conversation with the prime minister of Great Britain Keir Starmer, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and German Chancellor Friedrich Mura.
Canada negotiations with the European Union
On Monday, Carney also met on double -sided talks with the chairwoman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the chairman of the European Council Antonio Costa. For several months, Canada has been strengthening cooperation with the European Union, there was even speculation about joining Canada to the European Union.
The announcement of the prime minister's press office after talks with von der Leyen and Costa defines the current state of Canada's relationship with the EU as “close and growing” and announces their deepening both in the economic field, based “on the principles of law” and in the field of security and defense.
The conversation also concerned critical minerals and “fair and lasting peace in Ukraine”. Further talks will be held during the Kanada – European Union “in the near future”.
