Professor Paweł Śpiewak, a sociologist and historian, died at the age of 71. His son, Jan Śpiewak, informed about his father’s death.

Paweł Śpiewak was a sociologist and historian of ideas, a habilitated doctor of humanities and an associate professor at the University of Warsaw. He was a publicist and a member of the Sejm of the 5th term. In 2011–2020 he was the director of the Jewish Historical Institute.

In 2013, he received the Fr. Józef Tischner in the category “Religious or philosophical writing” for lifetime achievement.

He was the author of many books, including “Towards the common good”, “Midrashes: book of books”, “Memory after communism” or “Żydokomuna”. He was also a member of the Social College at the Polin Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

In the 2005 elections, he was elected to the Sejm of the 5th term in the Warsaw constituency (he ran as a non-partisan candidate from the Civic Platform list). In 2007, he did not run for re-election.
